Double Win for Police Association Raffle

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Loving this story today. The Centralia Police Officers Association recently raffled off a truck in hopes of raising a small amount of money. But guess what? The man who won the truck (a business owner from out of town) donated it right back! That’s right–not only did they get some money by selling their raffle tickets, but they got to keep the truck for their own use in the community. That’s some serious generosity on the part of the towing company owner who won the raffle.

I really love this idea. I like to buy raffle tickets from charities when I can afford it. They don’t usually cost any more than $20 at most, so I’m not really out much when I don’t win (and who ever expects to?). But say I did win a prize from an organization that I really cared about? It never would have occurred to me to donate the prize right back, but what a great thing it would be. Say the prize is worth something like $1000 (or even more like the truck in this story). That’s like being able to donate all of that money to a cause that I care about for only $20. It doesn’t hurt my budget, and could do so much for an NPO.

Picture Living The High Life

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

I just read about a raffle in Orange County, California today that seemed to be pretty idyllic.  Of course, we all know the Orange County, CA is a very nice part of the country to live it.  It is where Laguna Beach is located, for those of you who have seen the popular MTV show.  This may attribute to the reason why the raffle prize was so amazing.

Basically, the raffle was to benefit Irvine Unified School District programs in CA and offered an amazing travel opportunity to six of the most nice resorts in Orange County.  All of the resorts were coastal resorts and they include the Montage Laguna Beach, The Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel, The Balboa Bay Club, the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa, the Surf & Sand Resort, Laguna Cliffs Resort and Spa and the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort.  The prize included a night, spa treatment, and dinner at each of these resorts.  That sounds like the high life to me.

This prize is just one of the many that they have been raffling off throughout the summer.  The other prizes include a BMW, $700,000 condo, and $500,000 cash.  I bet those raffle tickets sell like wildfire.  This raffle greatly benefits their school district because they just suffered a twenty million dollar cutback from the government.  More school districts should hold raffles like this to improve their schools.

Car Raffles

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

A big prize like a car requires a big raffle.  If you are looking to raise a whole lot of money for your organization, choosing a car as your raffling prize is definitely the way to go.  There are a few things you have to consider though when you are throwing a car raffle.  They are not the easiest raffles to put together.

Most organizations offer a cash prize in place of the car if the winner decides he/she does not want the car.  Also, it’s a good idea to offer a few smaller cash prizes to help you sell more tickets for your organization.  What you don’t want to come across as is one of those car raffles that they hold in almost every mall in America.  You are not out to steal people’s addresses, you are out to raise money for a good cause and you need to make sure people know that.

The car you choose needs to be a desirable car, not just any car.  You will want to work with a dealer to get this car, and offer them lot’s of free advertising to be able to get a good deal on the car.  A plus to going with a dealer is that you can use their client base as possible raffle ticket buyers by mailing them a letter about the raffle and keeping the car your raffling off, along with a sign for your raffle, in their show room where a lot of people will see it.   These are just a few things to consider.
