A Raffle for The Bride and Groom

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

I attended a bridal shower last night and it was a lot of fun.  It actually gave me a really good idea for a raffle.  I think with most weddings, the expense of it is the biggest burden on the bride and groom.  Either they have to pay for it themselves or their parents are helping them pay for it.  Nevertheless, most weddings end up costing tens of thousands of dollars.  I think that if there was a way to help them with this expense, that bridal showers could take a new twist.

I recently got a lot of Twilight memorabilia donated to me and I have a bridal shower that I have to throw soon for my cousin.  I think it would be cool idea to hold a raffle at the shower with all of the proceeds going to the bride and groom to help them pay for the wedding or the honeymoon.  The Twilight stuff is really, really nice stuff that any Twilight fan would love to have.  The shower I’m throwing for my cousin is actually Twilight themed because she loves the book series so much.

I figure if I include info about the raffle on the invitation then people could bring two dollars, along with whatever present they buy her, to buy a raffle ticket.  Two dollars is not much at all to pay for a raffle ticket, so I think people would be willing to do that.  My cousin was so excited for this idea, so I think it will go really well.

ATP in Cincy

Yesterday, a friend and mine went to the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and Women’s Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, OH.  It was really the first tennis matches I have ever been to, and it was awesome.  The first thing that struck my friend and I were the souvenirs being sold.  We walked in and noticed there were chic purses and fine jewelry being sold.  Whoa!  Where are we?  We’re used to going to Reds games and the best thing being sold is a $1 hot dog.  We were in a different world.

We watched the first doubles match for a set and then decided to walk around the arena.  We found out very quickly that there is all kinds of great SWAG to get at a tennis match.  SWWWAAAGGG!!!!  (Stuff we all get).  So after picking up banana smoothie samples, pens, note pads, chip clips, sun tan lotion, hand sanitizer, candy and lip balm, we were feeling pretty good about ourselves.  On top of all the Swag, there were also several raffles to enter.  We signed up for two raffles that were for laptops, one being the new laptop minis.  The other raffle was for brand new windows for your home, which I would have loved!  There was a raffle for the chance to flip the coin at the finals on Sunday, but I wasn’t interested.  Here’s hoping I get a call and win a new laptop!  I signed up at the Dell raffle several times with different email addresses.  I recently won a pop up book on a blog, so I’m feeling lucky.

The rest of the day was exciting because I got to watch Roger Federer dominate.  He is an absolute machine.  It was a treat to watch him dispose of his opponent, Hewitt.

Can Man Live On Raffles Alone?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

While browsing through Hulu one night a few months ago, I came across a TV show that asks the above question.  Can a man live purely on raffles or sweepstakes?  Can he survive if everything else is taken away from him, and he has to live on mere chance or luck.

A crazy, yet hilarious Japanese show called Denpa Shonen let the viewers play out this question right before their eyes.  You get to watch as Japanese comedian Nasubi lives his life out in front of the camera.  For months he lives without clothing and scarce food.  Every time the door knocks and he wins a prize through a raffle, he goes nuts with celebration.

Nasubi stays busy all day filling out post cards and writing into sweepstakes he finds in magazines provided to him by the show’s producers.  With enough entries into drawings, he may just possibly survive.  Check out the first episode below.
